Selecting the correct tank style in your Smart Oil Gauge app can mean the difference between knowing it's time to order, or completely running out because the app is configured for the wrong tank.
The Smart Oil Gauge uses an ultrasonic sensor to measure the level of oil in the tank. Since the sensor records a distance from the top of the tank to the top of the oil, it must know how tall, wide, and long the tank is to determine the volume of oil.
The default tank style in the app is 275 Vertical. This is by far the most common oil tank size in the Northeast, but there are many others. Please refer to the pictures below, as well as the dimensions in the chart that follows to determine the proper tank style selection.
Steel tanks can be vertical (left), or horizontal (second from left). If you have twin tanks that are plumbed together, select the appropriate tank style, then change the number of tanks to 2.
Roth Double-Wall Tanks have a very different geometry to them than the Granby Steel tanks. If you have one, make sure to choose the correct size Roth Tank (1000L is the most common). The Smart Oil Gauge is not compatible with the 1500L due to an internal baffle that interferes with the sensor.
NOTE: Granby also makes a double-wall tank. If you have a Granby double-wall tank, find the comparable Roth tank in the table below and select that in the app.
Adapters:
The Smart Oil Gauge is designed to thread into a 2" fitting on a regular steel tank. If you have a smaller fitting (e.g. 1.5" NPT or 1.25" NPT), you MUST use one of our adapters or the sensor will not work. Using an off-the-shelf adapter will cause interference with the sensor, causing it to read full.
Further, if you have a Double-Wall Tank such as a Roth or Granby (this is a boxy tank - see above), you MUST purchase the Roth adapter. The Smart Oil Gauge will not work if you simply thread it into the top of the fitting that comes on the tank.

Setting a Custom Tank Size:
If you do not see your tank size listed in the app, refer to the table below to find your 'Custom Size ID' Number. If your tank is not listed below, email support@smartoilgauge.com with a picture and dimensions of your tank and we can provide you with your own Custom Size ID.
